New Delhi: India’s electric passenger vehicle (EPV) market recorded a sharp 102 per cent year-on-year growth in the second quarter of 2026, significantly outperforming the overall passenger vehicle market, which expanded 26 per cent during the period, according to a CyberMedia Research (CMR) report.

The rapid growth was supported by a wider choice of electric models, improved vehicle availability and the growing cost advantage of EVs over conventional petrol-powered vehicles. Rising fuel prices also encouraged some internal-combustion engine vehicle buyers to consider electric alternatives.

CMR expects electric vehicles to account for 7-8 per cent of India’s passenger vehicle market by the end of 2026. The report also highlighted growing demand for connected and technology-rich vehicles, with connected passenger vehicles recording 60 per cent year-on-year growth in Q2.

SUVs continued to dominate the passenger vehicle market, accounting for 58 per cent of sales and growing 33 per cent year-on-year. The findings point to a broader shift in India’s automobile market, with electrification, connectivity, digital features and advanced safety technologies increasingly becoming mainstream purchase considerations.
