Bengaluru, October 08, 2026: Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi has successfully treated a 53-year–old woman with complex heart condition involving an enlarged main artery measuring 5.2 cms, a severely leaking heart valve and a hole in the heart. The four-hour surgery was performed by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors led by Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, Dr Sanjay B.S, Senior Consultant, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and Dr Mathew M. Thomas, Associate Consultant, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
The patient had been experiencing shortness of breath while climbing stairs. Medical evaluation revealed an aneurysm, an abnormal enlargement of the aorta (the main artery carrying blood from the heart), along with significant aortic valve regurgitation, (a condition in which the valve does not close properly, allowing blood to flow backwards). Her condition was further complicated by atrial septal defect (ASD), an opening in the wall separating the heart’s upper chambers.
Following a detailed evaluation, doctors recommended a Bentall procedure, which involves replacing the affected section of the main artery and the faulty heart valve. The ASD was also treated during the same operation, allowing the team to address all three conditions in a single surgical intervention. The surgery was completed in four hours. Following the procedure, the patient was closely monitored in the ICU before being shifted to the ward. After a week of stable recovery, she was discharged in a stable condition. A follow-up heart scan showed that the new artificial valve was functioning normally.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Sanjay B.S., Senior Consultant – Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, said, “The presence of an enlarged aorta, a severely leaking aortic valve and an atrial septal defect meant that the patient required a carefully planned surgical approach. The Bentall procedure enabled us to address the aorta and the aortic valve, while the ASD was treated during the same operation. Managing these conditions together required close coordination and careful attention to the patient’s overall heart function.”
Dr. Mathew M. Thomas, Associate Consultant – Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, said, “Following a major cardiac procedure, close post-operative monitoring is essential to assess recovery and identify any concerns early. In this case, the patient progressed from ICU care to the ward and was discharged after seven days in a stable condition. Her follow-up scan confirmed that the replacement valve was functioning normally, providing an important assessment of her recovery.”
Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru said “The first Bentall procedure at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi marks a significant development in the hospital’s cardiac surgery programme. Procedures involving the aorta and heart valves call for specialised surgical expertise and coordinated multidisciplinary care. This milestone reflects our continued efforts to strengthen advanced cardiac surgical services and make specialised care accessible to patients in Bengaluru and surrounding regions.
Mr. Ratheef Naik, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, said, “This milestone reflects the dedication of our cardiac team and the hospital’s continued focus on building specialised clinical capabilities. We remain committed to providing comprehensive, patient-centric care and ensuring that people in Bengaluru and surrounding regions have access to advanced treatment close to home.”
