Hyderabad, 16th September 2026: Doctors at Yashoda Hospitals, Somajiguda, have successfully treated a 10-month–old child with a complex congenital heart condition. The child had severe pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) along with an atrial septal defect (ASD). The case was led by Dr. Pankaj Vinod Jariwala, who used a careful, staged approach instead of treating both problems at once.
The case was made more complex by an interrupted inferior vena cava (IVC), a rare anatomical variation.
As the first step, doctors performed a Percutaneous Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty (PBPV). This is a minimally invasive procedure. It helped widen the narrowed pulmonary valve. This reduced pressure on the right side of the heart. It also improved blood flow to the lungs.
The ASD was left untreated for now. Doctors will monitor it closely. Device closure is planned for around age 5, if the defect is still significant at that time.
Dr. Pankaj Vinod Jariwala, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Structural Heart/Valve Specialist, Yashoda Hospitals, Somajiguda, said: “When a child has more than one heart defect, we don’t rush to fix everything together. We look at what the heart needs most urgently. In this case, relieving the valve blockage came first. The ASD can wait and be treated later, when it’s the right time for the child.”
Dr. Suresh Kumar Panuganti, Lead Consultant – Pediatric Critical Care and Pediatrics, Yashoda Hospitals, Somajiguda, added: “In congenital heart disease, timing matters as much as treatment. We treated the valve problem first. This helped stabilize the child’s heart. It also lowered the risk of complications. Every case needs its own plan, especially in infants.”
The child is recovering well. Regular follow-up visits are planned with the pediatric cardiology and critical care teams.
This case shows the value of a step-by-step approach in complex heart conditions in infants. Each child’s treatment plan is based on their own heart anatomy and needs.
