Meerut, Sep 16: Several people were taken to hospital after a chlorine gas leak at a sewage treatment plant in Pallavpuram Phase-2 of Meerut, causing concern among residents in the nearby area.
The leak was reported from the sewage treatment plant in N Pocket on Tuesday evening. Following the incident, residents living close to the facility were advised to stay indoors, keep doors and windows shut and avoid going near the plant.
The Pallavpuram Residents Welfare Association also urged residents to take precautions, particularly families with children, elderly people and those with respiratory problems.
People who were outside the affected area were advised to return home and remain indoors until the situation was brought under control.
The impact of the gas leak was initially expected to be limited to an area of about 50 metres around the plant. Officials and plant personnel began efforts to locate the source of the leak and contain it.
Several people reportedly experienced health problems following the incident and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Further details about their condition were awaited.
Residents were asked not to panic and to follow safety instructions. No major property damage was reported immediately.
Authorities and concerned officials continued working to control the leak and restore normal conditions at the sewage treatment plant. The cause of the incident is also expected to be examined.
