Sept 14: At 85, Mr. Sukumar Banerjee’s journey from a life-threatening stroke and prolonged critical illness to regaining mobility and returning to near-normal life stands as a remarkable example of how coordinated home-based critical care and rehabilitation can support recovery.
Mr. Banerjee was admitted to a renowned hospital after suffering a severe stroke complicated by a serious systemic infection. His condition deteriorated significantly during hospitalization, requiring prolonged ICU care, invasive ventilator support and a tracheostomy to maintain his airway. For nearly two months, he remained dependent on advanced ventilatory support.
Despite intensive hospital-based treatment, the prolonged critical illness and severe infection posed major challenges to his recovery. Following a detailed clinical assessment and extensive discussions with the treating team, his family decided to continue his treatment and rehabilitation at home with comprehensive critical care support.

Eventually, the tracheostomy tube was successfully removed.

Today, Mr. Banerjee has successfully transitioned from intensive critical care to step-down nursing care. He no longer requires oxygen support or Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV), marking a significant milestone in his recovery.
His family expressed immense gratitude and happiness, sharing that they had never imagined he would recover to such an extent and regain his normal life.
