JD Institute of Fashion Technology and The Charter Launch India’s First Founder-Student Designer Auction Platform

Mumbai, July 01: In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at bridging design education with entrepreneurship, JD Institute of Fashion Technology, in collaboration with The Charter (Bombay Founders’ Club), successfully hosted India’s inaugural FounderStudent Designer Auction Platform, creating a unique avenue for young designers to collaborate directly with emerging consumer brands.

Held at the Prabodhan Thackeray Auditorium, Mumbai, the initiative brought together aspiring design students and some of India’s leading D2C founders on a single platform. The event concluded with 22 student groups securing collaborations with founders, who selected design concepts aligned with their brand vision for future capsule collections and creative partnerships.

Moving beyond the conventional format of student showcases, the platform introduced an interactive auction model where founders evaluated, engaged with, and shortlisted student concepts based on creativity, commercial relevance, and brand fit. The initiative created meaningful opportunities for students to receive direct industry validation while offering founders access to fresh design talent and innovative ideas.

The event was attended by Mr. Yogesh Dalal, Trustee and Strategic Leader, JD Institute of Fashion Technology, and Dr. Payal Dalal, Director, who congratulated the participating students and founders for embracing a platform that strengthens the connection between academia and industry.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Yogesh Dalal highlighted the importance of integrating industry exposure into education, reaffirming the institute‘s commitment to preparing students for real-world careers through experiential learning and industry collaboration.

Dr. Payal Dalal commended the creativity, professionalism, and entrepreneurial mindset displayed by the students throughout the event. She noted that initiatives like these reflect the evolving future of education, where innovation, collaboration, and industry engagement are becoming central to the learning experience.

Throughout the event, students presented research-backed concepts, mood boards, prototypes, and garment samples before an audience of entrepreneurs and brand leaders. Each presentation reflected months of ideation and design development, providing students with the opportunity to showcase their work directly to decision-makers from the startup ecosystem.

As founders interacted with participants and selected concepts that aligned with their business goals, the venue evolved into a collaborative space where creativity met commerce. By the conclusion of the event, 22 student groups had secured founder partnerships, setting the stage for collaborative capsule collections and future design projects.

For participating students, the platform offered much more than a showcase. It provided firsthand exposure to entrepreneurial thinking, valuable industry feedback, and the opportunity to understand the expectations of working with growing brands. The experience also enabled them to build professional relationships that could shape their future careers.

Speaking on the occasion, Rinesh Dalal, Director, JD Institute of Fashion Technology, said, “This initiative represents a significant step forward in how design education can evolve alongside industry. Rather than limiting students to classroom learning and exhibitions, we wanted to create a platform where they could engage directly with founders, understand business expectations, and see their ideas translated into real opportunities. The response from both students and founders has been extremely encouraging, and we believe this is the beginning of a new model of industry-academia collaboration.”

He further added, “Our partnership with The Charter reflects a shared vision of nurturing innovation by bringing together education, entrepreneurship, and design. We look forward to building on this initiative and creating many more opportunities for emerging creative talent.”

Sharing his thoughts, Devarsh Saraf, Founder, Bombay Founders’ Club, said, “The quality of ideas presented by the students was remarkable. It was encouraging to see founders actively engaging with young designers and recognising the value they can bring to growing brands. Platforms like these create meaningful collaborations that benefit both entrepreneurs and emerging creative talent. We are delighted to partner with JD Institute in launching this initiative and look forward to seeing these collaborations grow.”

The FounderStudent Designer Auction Platform also underscored the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in today’s innovation-led economy. As brands increasingly seek originality, compelling storytelling, and differentiated design, emerging designers are becoming strategic partners in building consumer experiences.

By connecting students directly with entrepreneurs, JD Institute of Fashion Technology and The Charter have demonstrated how educational institutions can create meaningful industry exposure while encouraging entrepreneurial thinking and practical learning.

Industry leaders, startup founders, faculty members, mentors, and invited guests praised the initiative for introducing a fresh approach to design education one that combines experiential learning with tangible industry opportunities.

Founded in 1988JD Institute of Fashion Technology has remained at the forefront of design education in India, consistently introducing industry-integrated learning models that prepare students for evolving creative careers. Through initiatives such as the FounderStudent Designer Auction Platform, the institute continues to strengthen its commitment to nurturing the next generation of designers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

As the selected student groups embark on their collaborations with founders, the inaugural FounderStudent Designer Auction Platform marks the beginning of a new chapter in design education—where classrooms connect with boardrooms, creative ideas evolve into business opportunities, and students become active contributors to India’s growing creative economy.
