New Delhi, Aug 24: India’s digital payments story has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, with the Unified Payments Interface emerging as one of the most important parts of everyday financial life.

UPI’s Remarkable Decade: From a Small Beginning to 24,162 Crore Transactions

Launched in 2016, UPI has grown from a relatively modest digital payment platform into a system used by millions of people for everything from small purchases at local shops to larger person-to-person transfers. The scale of this change is reflected in the latest government data.

Annual UPI transaction volume increased from 1.78 crore in 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in 2025-26, representing an almost 13,000-fold rise. During the same period, the value of transactions climbed from around Rs 0.07 lakh crore to nearly Rs 314 lakh crore.

Behind these numbers is a significant change in how people conduct everyday transactions. A quick scan of a QR code or a few taps on a mobile phone can now complete a payment within seconds, making digital payments increasingly convenient for consumers, shopkeepers and businesses.

UPI has also helped bring digital payments to a much wider section of society. Its interoperable system allows users of different banks and payment applications to transact with one another, making the experience simpler and more accessible.

The network has expanded considerably since its early days. The number of banks connected to UPI reached 703 by FY 2025-26, compared with 44 in the first year of operations.

The momentum has remained strong in 2026. Monthly transaction volumes crossed 2,300 crore in May, reaching 2,320 crore transactions. July subsequently recorded 2,366 crore transactions, marking another high in the platform’s growth journey, according to government data reported on Monday.

The growing use of UPI for small-value payments is particularly significant. It has made digital transactions practical for everyday purchases and helped many small merchants participate in the formal digital economy.

UPI’s success has also attracted international attention. The platform has been recognised globally for its scale and real-time payment capabilities, reflecting India’s growing strength in digital public infrastructure.

What began as a new payment option has therefore become part of the daily routine for millions of Indians. The journey from just a few crore transactions in its early years to more than 24,162 crore transactions annually shows how quickly technology can change the way people pay, save time and do business.

As UPI enters its next phase, its biggest achievement may be not just the numbers, but the way digital payments have become simpler, faster and more familiar for ordinary people across India.
