ANAHEIM, Calif., July 25: Tactus AI today unveiled Elsie, an autonomous humanoid lab assistant built to work at the clinical laboratory bench, at the 2026 Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo. Powered by physical AI, Elsie works at the bench as a two-armed assistant, moves freely throughout the lab and is enabled by rich perception abilities for touch, force sensing, depth, machine vision and a sophisticated proprietary learning technology software suite. She is designed to operate a lab’s existing instruments under its own validated procedures, with no retooling and no instrument replacement.
Tactus is showing Elsie alongside the Tactus Lab Orchestration platform at Booth 2616 through July 30.
The shortage labs already feel
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects roughly 22,600 openings a year for clinical laboratory technologists and technicians through 2034. The American Society for Clinical Pathology’s 2024 vacancy survey put the vacancy rate in anatomic pathology at 28%, with 7% to 15% common across most departments. Testing volume and complexity keep climbing while benches sit short-staffed.
“Labs aren’t short on automation. They’re short on hands,” said Michael Quick, Chief Commercial Officer of Tactus AI. “Most labs own instruments that could run far more hours than they do. What’s missing is a trained operator to keep them running. That’s what we built Elsie to do, and she does it on the bench using the SOPs a lab already has, instead of asking the lab to rebuild around a robot.”
Three parts: robot, orchestration, skills
The Tactus platform has three parts. Elsie is the humanoid that works at human benches with human tools. The Lab Orchestration platform plans and runs multi-step protocols across robots, instruments, and staff. The skill library holds validated capabilities, each certified against a customer’s SOPs before it goes live.
Across those skills, Elsie is built for six kinds of work: monitoring instruments and flagging exceptions; moving samples, plates, reagents, and consumables; running tests to validated SOPs; clearing first-line faults so a run keeps going; routine cleaning, calibration, and consumables changes; and logging every action to the platform.
Customer QA signs off at every gate
Every skill starts with the customer’s own inputs: instrument list, validated SOPs, error codes, and named leads. These allow Tactus to build a high-fidelity digital twin of the bench, a physics-accurate simulation where Elsie’s policies are trained and stress-tested across hundreds of simulated runs before she ever touches a live sample. Each skill is then validated on site, next to lab staff, against the customer’s acceptance criteria. Nothing runs live until the customer’s own quality team approves it.
Tactus operates within enterprise security and privacy standards including ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II (July 2026), and HIPAA and GDPR compliance, so patient data stays governed to the same standard as the lab’s own systems.
Bringing Elsie to labs in 2026
Tactus is selecting three to five launch laboratories this year, with the first pilots beginning at U.S. academic medical centers. Each engagement starts with a four-domain readiness review: physical site, instruments, workflow, and data systems. Tactus delivers a Robot-Readiness Assessment report within 30 days, with a gap list, a skill roadmap, an operating plan, and a pilot scope of work. Pilots begin with one jointly chosen workflow and go live tracking against shared success criteria.
