New Delhi, Aug 21: India’s unincorporated non-agricultural sector is showing encouraging signs of expansion, with stronger business activity and rising employment during the April-June quarter. The latest figures highlight the important role played by small enterprises in supporting livelihoods, entrepreneurship and economic activity across the country.

According to the latest government survey, the sector grew 9.2 per cent during the April-June period, while employment increased by 6.5 per cent. The improvement reflects continued activity across manufacturing, trade and services, which together form a significant part of India’s grassroots business ecosystem.

The unincorporated sector includes a large number of small businesses and enterprises that contribute to local economies by creating jobs, generating income and providing goods and services to communities. Its performance therefore remains an important indicator of economic activity beyond the organised corporate sector.

The rise in employment is particularly encouraging for the country’s workforce. More jobs within small enterprises can support household incomes while creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and workers in both urban and rural areas.

The latest growth also points to the evolving nature of small businesses, with many enterprises increasingly adopting digital payments, online platforms and other technology-enabled tools. These changes are helping businesses connect with customers beyond their immediate markets and improve operational efficiency.

Digital adoption is also opening new avenues for small enterprises in areas such as online sales, digital marketing, customer engagement and financial services. As more businesses embrace technology, their ability to compete and expand can improve significantly.

The continued expansion of India’s small-business ecosystem offers a positive outlook for inclusive growth. Stronger business activity combined with employment generation can help deepen entrepreneurship and create broader economic opportunities.

The latest performance underscores the resilience and adaptability of India’s grassroots economy, while highlighting the growing contribution of small businesses to employment, innovation and the country’s overall development.
