The five-year scheme will be implemented from 2026-27 to 2030-31 and is designed to expand mobile phone production, deepen domestic value addition and build a stronger supply chain within the country.
The government expects the programme to generate around Rs 39 lakh crore in cumulative mobile phone production and create approximately 60,000 direct jobs during its implementation period. It is also expected to strengthen India’s position in global electronics supply chains and support further growth in mobile phone exports.
A key focus of the scheme is to move India’s mobile manufacturing ecosystem beyond large-scale assembly. Greater emphasis will be placed on domestic sourcing of components and sub-assemblies, helping Indian suppliers become a larger part of the electronics value chain.
The programme will also support the growth of Indian-owned mobile phone brands, with a focus on product design, research and development and the creation of Indian intellectual property. This is expected to give domestic companies greater scope to develop products for both Indian and international markets.
The scheme follows the successful expansion of India’s mobile manufacturing industry over the past decade and represents the next phase of that growth. The government’s focus is now shifting towards deeper localisation, stronger domestic capabilities and greater value creation within the country.
For manufacturers, component suppliers and technology companies, the initiative is expected to create new opportunities for investment and expansion. For young people, the planned employment generation could provide fresh opportunities in manufacturing, engineering, technology and related services.
The government’s latest initiative reflects a broader effort to build an electronics ecosystem that is competitive, innovative and increasingly self-reliant, while enabling Indian companies to participate more strongly in global markets.
With its large financial commitment and focus on production, local sourcing, design and employment, the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme is expected to give India’s electronics sector a significant boost and strengthen the country’s journey towards becoming a global centre for mobile and technology manufacturing
