New Delhi, Sep 18: Mobile users could see stronger safeguards around unwanted automated calls as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduces tighter requirements for organisations using robocalls.

Under the revised framework, entities planning to make automated or pre-recorded voice calls will be required to provide advance information about such communication. The move is designed to improve transparency and help telecom operators monitor automated calling activity more effectively.

Robocalling has become an increasingly common way for businesses to reach large numbers of customers. While automated calls can support legitimate customer communication, their misuse can lead to excessive promotional calls and other unwanted communication.

The advance declaration requirement is expected to give telecom service providers greater visibility into automated voice traffic. This could help operators identify unauthorised or unusual calling patterns and take appropriate action where required.

The revised requirements also place greater responsibility on businesses to ensure that their communication practices comply with telecom regulations. Companies using automated voice systems for marketing, customer updates or other commercial purposes will need to incorporate the new compliance measures into their calling processes.

For consumers, the changes are aimed at creating a more transparent communication environment and strengthening safeguards against unwanted automated calls. Improved monitoring could also help reduce the misuse of telecom networks.

The development comes as businesses increasingly turn to automation and technology-driven communication to engage with customers. While these tools can improve efficiency and reach, greater transparency is becoming important to ensure that automated communication remains responsible and compliant.

TRAI’s latest measures are therefore intended to bring greater accountability to automated calling while allowing legitimate businesses to continue using technology for customer engagement within the prescribed regulatory framework.
