New Delhi, July 31: More than 5.5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 so far, with a large number of taxpayers completing the filing process on the deadline day.

The strong response reflects growing awareness among taxpayers and the increasing adoption of digital platforms for income tax compliance. The Income Tax Department’s e-filing system enabled individuals and organisations to submit their returns conveniently through an online process.
Officials said the department has been working continuously to improve taxpayer services by simplifying procedures, strengthening digital infrastructure, and making compliance smoother for citizens.
The high number of filings highlights the expanding use of technology in tax administration and the growing participation of taxpayers in fulfilling their statutory responsibilities.
Taxpayers are advised to complete the verification process after filing their returns to ensure timely processing. The department continues to focus on providing efficient, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly services.
