7th June 2024-
Today, the question of who will be the first BJP Chief Minister of Odisha is set to be answered. Speculation is rife, with at least half a dozen names in the mix, including prominent MPs and MLAs such as senior leaders Dharmendra Pradhan and Baijayant Panda, along with two tribal leaders and a woman candidate.

Dharmendra Pradhan, a Union minister for a decade and the MP from Sambalpur, has also served as the party’s election in-charge in several states, including Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Baijayant Panda, another key BJP figure, is the MP from Kendrapara. Jual Oram, a veteran MP, former Union Minister, and tribal leader, recently won the election from the Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituency. However, there is debate over whether the BJP, already below the majority mark in Parliament, will appoint an MP as the Chief Minister of Odisha. Girish Chandra Murmu, the Controller and Auditor General of India and a tribal leader from the Mayurbhanj district is also a contender.

The swearing-in ceremony for Naveen Patnaik’s successor is scheduled for June 10, with Governor Raghubar Das overseeing the oath ceremony. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to attend. By the end of the day, Odisha will have the name of its new Chief Minister.
