Kathmandu/New Delhi, Aug 27: Nepal is facing a severe humanitarian crisis after devastating floods and landslides claimed at least 159 lives, while 384 people have been reported missing, including 133 Indian nationals, according to information from the Nepal Tourism Board.

The disaster struck parts of Nepal after heavy rainfall triggered sudden flooding and landslides in mountainous areas. Several people were travelling through the region for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage when the flooding occurred, leaving many stranded and cutting off road and communication links.
Rescue teams are continuing operations to locate missing people and reach communities affected by the floods. Difficult mountainous terrain, damaged roads and disrupted communications have made the rescue effort particularly challenging.
The large number of Indian nationals reported missing has raised concern in India. Authorities are working with their Nepalese counterparts to gather information about those affected and coordinate assistance for stranded and missing citizens.
India has also stepped up its humanitarian response by handing over around 10 tonnes of flood relief material to Nepal. The assistance includes essential supplies intended to support people affected by the disaster and help ongoing relief operations.
The relief material is aimed at providing immediate support to displaced and vulnerable families, particularly those facing shortages of basic necessities following damage to homes and infrastructure.
The floods have disrupted transportation and essential services in several parts of Nepal. Damage to roads and bridges has made it difficult for rescue teams and relief workers to reach some affected areas, while power and communication disruptions have added to the difficulties faced by residents and stranded travellers.
India’s assistance comes as Nepal continues its rescue and recovery efforts and reflects the close ties between the two neighbouring countries. Additional support may be provided depending on the evolving requirements on the ground.
The situation remains fluid, with authorities continuing to search for missing people and assess the full extent of the damage. The immediate focus remains on saving lives, reaching stranded communities and providing food, shelter, medical assistance and other essential supplies to those affected by the floods.
