The contest at the Wagener Hockey Stadium promises to be a high-pressure encounter, with little separating the teams in the race for the second qualifying spot from Pool D.
India are currently second in the group with three points. They began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales before losing 2-4 to England. Pakistan have one point after drawing with Wales and suffering a 1-4 defeat against England.
England have already secured a top-two finish after winning both their matches. The remaining qualification spot will be decided through the India-Pakistan and England-Wales matches.
India need at least a draw to secure second place, while Pakistan must win to keep their semifinal hopes alive. Wales are also in contention and will need a victory against England to have a chance of progressing.
India go into the match with a strong recent record against Pakistan. The Indian team has won 17 of the 19 meetings between the sides over the past decade, with the other two matches ending in draws. Pakistan have not defeated India in that period.
However, India head coach Craig Fulton has stressed the need for his players to focus on their game rather than the occasion. He said the rivalry remains important, but India must maintain their style, be clinical in front of goal and avoid giving Pakistan opportunities.
India will again look to captain Harmanpreet Singh for attacking inspiration. The experienced drag-flicker has scored three goals in the tournament so far, all from penalty corners, and remains one of India’s key weapons.
The Indian forwards have also shown encouraging movement and creativity in the opening matches, but finishing will be crucial against Pakistan, particularly in a game where scoring opportunities could be limited.
Pakistan, meanwhile, will enter the contest with everything to play for. With only one point from two matches, they need a win to stay in the semifinal race. Their situation could make them an especially determined opponent as they look to produce a result against their traditional rivals.
For India, the challenge will be to handle the emotion surrounding the fixture while maintaining tactical discipline. Pakistan will be hoping to use the pressure of the occasion to their advantage and revive their campaign.
The match is therefore set to be more than another chapter in the historic India-Pakistan rivalry, with qualification, confidence and World Cup ambitions all riding on the result.
