New Delhi, Sep 8: India is giving a major development push to villages located along its international borders, with a combined outlay of Rs 11,639 crore under the Vibrant Villages Programme. The initiative covers more than 2,616 villages and aims to improve infrastructure, create livelihood opportunities and make remote border communities better places to live and work.

The programme is focused on addressing some of the long-standing challenges faced by people in remote border areas. Better roads, electricity, telecommunications, healthcare, education and other essential facilities are expected to improve daily life and connect these villages more closely with the wider economy.
Economic development is another important part of the initiative. Greater support for agriculture, horticulture, tourism, local businesses, cooperatives, self-help groups and skill development can create more opportunities for people to earn within their own communities. This could help strengthen village economies and reduce the need for people to move to cities in search of work.
The government is also encouraging border security forces to purchase essential items such as milk, vegetables, eggs and grains from nearby villages. Such local procurement can give farmers and small producers a steady market while keeping more economic activity within these remote communities.
The programme is being implemented in two phases. The first phase focuses on villages along the northern border, while the second phase extends the development approach to other international land-border areas. Together, the two phases carry a combined outlay of Rs 11,639 crore.
For border communities, the impact could go well beyond physical infrastructure. Better schools and healthcare, improved connectivity, stronger local markets and new livelihood opportunities can help families build more secure futures in their own villages.
The larger objective is to turn remote border settlements into vibrant centres of growth. By investing in people as well as infrastructure, the programme can support local economies, improve living standards and contribute to more balanced development across some of India’s most geographically challenging regions.
