Guwahati: Assam is placing a stronger focus on entrepreneurship and self-employment to create new opportunities for its young population, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stressing the need to encourage youth to become job creators rather than only job seekers.

Speaking about the Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan, Sarma said the initiative is aimed at supporting young people who want to build their own businesses and develop sustainable sources of income.

The programme reflects the state government’s broader effort to create an environment where young people can turn their skills and ideas into businesses, generate employment and contribute to Assam’s economic growth.

Encouraging a Culture of Entrepreneurship

For many young people, securing a traditional salaried job remains the preferred route to financial stability. However, the growing focus on entrepreneurship is creating an alternative pathway — one where individuals can build their own enterprises while creating opportunities for others.

The Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan seeks to encourage this mindset by providing aspiring entrepreneurs with support to establish income-generating ventures.

The initiative covers a range of business activities and is intended to help eligible young people move from planning a business to actually starting one.

Financial Support and Guidance

Starting a business can be difficult for young entrepreneurs, particularly when access to capital, skills and market opportunities is limited.

The state’s initiative aims to address some of these barriers by providing financial assistance along with support and guidance for eligible beneficiaries.

The objective is not simply to provide financial assistance, but to help young entrepreneurs develop businesses that can survive and grow over time.

This approach is particularly relevant for small towns and rural areas, where a successful local enterprise can create employment within the community and reduce the need for young people to migrate elsewhere in search of work.

Women’s Participation Also Important

The entrepreneurship push is also creating opportunities for women to participate more actively in Assam’s economic growth.

Greater access to financial support, training and business opportunities can help women establish enterprises and become financially independent.

Women-led businesses can also have a wider impact on households and communities by creating additional sources of income and employment.

Skills and Entrepreneurship Go Together

A successful business requires more than capital. Young entrepreneurs also need practical skills, knowledge of markets, financial awareness and the ability to manage and expand an enterprise.

Assam’s wider focus on skill development and employment is therefore closely connected with the entrepreneurship agenda.

Providing young people with relevant skills while helping them access finance and markets can improve their ability to turn an idea into a sustainable business.

Creating Local Employment

The emphasis on job creation through entrepreneurship could have a wider economic impact across Assam.

A small manufacturing unit, food-processing business, retail venture, service enterprise or technology-based startup can create direct employment while generating demand for suppliers, transporters and other local services.

This can create a multiplier effect, particularly in smaller towns and rural communities.

A New Approach to Youth Employment

The Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan reflects a broader shift in the way youth employment is being approached.

Instead of viewing young people only as potential employees, the initiative seeks to encourage them to become entrepreneurs, employers and contributors to local economic development.

For Assam, the success of this approach will depend on continued access to finance, mentoring, skills, markets and institutional support.

If these elements work together effectively, the initiative could help nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs and strengthen Assam’s economic base.

The larger goal is not merely to help young people find work, but to give them the confidence and resources to build businesses, create employment and shape their own economic future.
