Prakriya Hospital Surgeons Successfully Replant Severed Arm in Rare Industrial Accident Case

Bengaluru, May 08: In a remarkable display of surgical precision and teamwork, specialists at Prakriya Hospitals, Nagasandra, Bengaluru, have successfully replanted a completely severed upper limb for a 50-year-old woman following a devastating industrial accident.

The patient, working late at her snack factory, suffered the injury when her dupatta got caught in an industrial dough mixing machine, severing her upper limb in seconds. Trapped and bleeding heavily, she demonstrated extraordinary courage by using a knife to cut the remaining skin bridge, freeing herself from the machine and calling for help. She was rushed to Prakriya Hospital with the amputated limb preserved in a plastic bag.

An emergency replantation surgery, led by Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nitu Joy and supported by anaesthesia and orthopaedic teams, restored blood flow within the critical ischemia period. The nine-hour procedure overcame significant challenges, including severe blood loss, crush injury, and substantial tissue loss with exposed vital structures. The patient recovered well and was discharged with a viable, salvaged limb.

“This case exemplifies the power of coordinated team effort in managing high-risk limb injuries,” said Dr. Somnath Chatterjee, Medical Director, Prakriya Hospitals, Bangalore. “Our specialists’ swift action and expertise turned a life-threatening situation into a success story.”

Dr. Srinivas Chirukuri, CEO, Prakriya Hospitals, Bangalore added, “Timely intervention, meticulous surgical planning, and sustained post-operative care were pivotal. We remain committed to advanced trauma care, limb salvage, and long-term rehabilitation for patients with complex injuries.”

Prakriya Hospitals continues to lead in emergency and reconstructive care, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for trauma management.
