Greater Noida, June 29: Reinforcing its commitment to medical excellence and advanced clinical training, NIIMS Medical College, Department of Ophthalmology, successfully conducted a Hands-on Wet Lab on Phacoemulsification in association with Alcon, a global leader in eye care technologies. The academic initiative aimed at enhancing surgical proficiency in modern cataract surgery techniques among postgraduate students, senior residents, and faculty members.

Focused on the theme “Skill Enhancement in Modern Cataract Surgery,” the workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly 25–30 postgraduate students, senior residents, and faculty members, who benefited from expert-led demonstrations and practical exposure to phacoemulsification procedures, one of the most advanced techniques used in cataract surgery.
The hands-on wet lab was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical ophthalmology education and real-time surgical expertise, enabling participants to gain practical knowledge, improve precision, and strengthen confidence in performing cataract surgeries under guided supervision.
Speaking on the occasion, Director Dr. S. N. Gupta, Director, NIIMS, said,
“Hands-on training programs like these are essential for developing competent surgeons and improving the quality of patient care in our institution. Practical exposure helps young medical professionals strengthen their surgical capabilities and clinical confidence.”
Highlighting the impact of continuous medical education, Medical Superintendent Dr. Ranjeet Gulliani said,
“Continuous skill development ensures better clinical outcomes and strengthens the healthcare delivery system within the hospital. Such academic interventions are crucial in preparing healthcare professionals for evolving medical challenges.”
Appreciating the initiative, Dean Dr. Manisha Jindal stated,
“Collaborative academic activities such as these provide valuable exposure to students and residents, helping them remain updated with the latest advancements and evolving technologies in ophthalmology and cataract surgery.”
Reaffirming the department’s vision for excellence in ophthalmic training, Head of the Department, Dr. J. S. Bhalla, remarked,
“Our objective is to create structured, hands-on learning opportunities that equip residents with practical surgical expertise and prepare them for real-world ophthalmic challenges.”
The workshop featured guided wet lab sessions, allowing participants to practice phacoemulsification techniques under expert supervision, significantly improving surgical confidence, hand-eye coordination, and procedural precision.
In his concluding remarks, Associate Professor Dr. Rahul Singh expressed gratitude to the institution and collaborators for supporting the initiative.
