We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ian E. Krop, MD, PhD, as Section Chief of Medical Oncology and Hematology and Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs for Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. Dr. Krop was selected from an exceptionally strong field of candidates following an extensive national search that solicited interest from over 250 individuals.

An international leader in breast cancer care and clinical investigation, Dr. Krop has brought a deep commitment to outstanding patient-centered care, scientific excellence, and clinical research to Yale Cancer Center. He joined Yale in 2022 and quickly became a trusted physician-leader and valued partner across Yale School of Medicine and the Yale New Haven Health System. He is widely recognized for his collaborative leadership approach and focus on quality, safety, and innovation in cancer care.

“I am excited to welcome Ian as our new Medical Oncology and Hematology Section Chief. He is an accomplished breast cancer oncologist, investigator and academic leader, and I look forward to working with him to support our faculty and trainees to further enhance our care for patients with cancer and blood disorders,” says Wolfram Goessling, MD, PhD chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine , chief of Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital and physician-in-chief for Medicine across the Yale New Haven Health System.

Dr. Krop has served as Chief Clinical Research Officer and Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) for Yale Cancer Center for the last four years. Under his leadership, the transformation of the CTO has been revolutionary. Staffing rates and retention have improved, time to activation has decreased dramatically, and most importantly, accrual has nearly doubled. The transformation of the CTO is accelerating the integration of clinical research into cancer care, strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration, and expanding the mentorship for clinicians and investigators focused on clinical research.

“We are excited to have Dr. Krop as the new Section Chief for Medical Oncology and Hematology and Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs. He is an exceptional researcher, clinician, and leader.  Dr Krop brings extensive experience to the role, and he will play a critical role in the ongoing growth of the Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital,” says Eric Winer, MD, Director of Yale Cancer Center and President and Physician-in-Chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital Yale New Haven Health System.

As Section Chief and Deputy Director, Dr. Krop will provide broad strategic and operational leadership for our medical oncology and hematology program in the Department of Medicine and across Yale Cancer and all Smilow Cancer Hospital locations. Dr. Krop will work closely with the disease-specific division chiefs in the Yale Cancer Center and section chiefs in the Department of Medicine to support medical oncology and hematology faculty development and recruitment. He will also work closely with nursing and administrative leaders.

As Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs, Ian will have broad oversight over clinical trials and clinical research. He will relinquish his role as medical director of the Clinical Trials Office and we will identify an individual, either internally or externally, to take over this role. Dr. Krop will ensure that the progress that has been made in the CTO continues.

Dr. Krop’s impact at Yale reflects his longstanding national and international leadership in oncology. Prior to joining Yale, he was at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for 20 years where he focused on drug development in breast cancer. Nationally, he serves as Chief Scientific Officer for the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium.
