Gandhinagar, Aug 18: Gujarat recorded 1,541 new breast cancer cases at the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) in Ahmedabad in 2025, highlighting the need for greater awareness, early screening and timely access to treatment.

Health Minister Pruful Pansheriya has urged women to be more attentive to their breast health and seek medical advice if they notice unusual or persistent changes. Early detection, he said, can improve the chances of effective treatment and recovery.

Breast cancer accounted for 31.2 per cent of cancers diagnosed among women in Gujarat, making it the most common cancer among women in the state. GCRI data showed that women aged 41-50 recorded the highest number of cases in 2025, with 469 diagnoses, followed by 436 cases among women aged 51-60.

Health officials have stressed the importance of not ignoring warning signs such as an unusual lump or other persistent changes. Greater awareness and timely medical consultation can help identify the disease at an earlier stage.

GCRI treated 26,812 cancer patients in 2025, including people from Gujarat and other states. The institute provides a range of diagnostic and treatment facilities, including digital mammography, advanced radiation and surgical technologies and genetic testing.

The figures underline the need to strengthen cancer awareness and screening efforts, particularly because delayed diagnosis can make treatment more difficult and place additional emotional and financial pressure on families.

The state’s approach is increasingly focused on combining early detection with accessible treatment and public awareness. For patients and their families, timely medical care can play an important role in improving treatment outcomes and reducing the burden of the disease.

The government has also highlighted the availability of affordable cancer treatment through public healthcare programmes, helping eligible patients access necessary medical services.
