Mumbai, Apr 20: The World Liver Day 2026 celebrates the theme of ‘Solid Habits, Strong Liver’ by highlighting the four strong habits of: eating a balanced diet, staying active, reducing alcohol intake and getting regular liver checks: that can keep the liver healthy and prevent serious complications. On World Liver Day, Bharat Serum and Vaccines Limited (BSV) continue to reaffirm its commitment towards building continuous scientific education among healthcare practitioners on managing life threatening bleeds associated with liver diseases.
Liver is the primary site of synthesis for most coagulation factors and the central organ responsible for maintaining hemostatic equilibrium1. Excessive alcohol consumption remains one of the leading contributors to liver damage worldwide. In fact, alcohol accounts for nearly 50% of all liver disease–related deaths globally2. Alcohol-related liver disease progresses through multiple stages, beginning with steatosis, where fat accumulates in liver cells. This may advance to alcoholic hepatitis, which causes liver inflammation and injury, often presenting with symptoms such as fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal discomfort. The most severe stage, cirrhosis, disrupts normal liver function and can result in serious, lifethreatening complications2.
Recent insights emphasize that patients with cirrhosis or ALF often present with deficiency in procoagulant factors and a decrease in anticoagulant proteins (like protein C, S, and antithrombin), leading to a disruption of hemostasis or trigger thrombosis. Hepatic coagulopathy is a complex disorder of bleeding and clotting that arises due to advanced liver disease. One of the therapeutic options for managing severe liver-related bleeding is the use of 4factor Prothrombin Complex Concentrate (4FPCC), which helps rapidly replace deficient clotting factors.
“As a responsible organization in bleed management, BSV continues to steer scientific conversations and discussions among healthcare practitioners through medical evidence, global experience, real-world data, and clear differentiation of 4F-PCC. Further, as part of ongoing medical education initiatives, we curate contentled sessions featuring globally recognised experts and leading medical universities, enabling them to share scientific insights and firsthand experiences in bleed management. On this World Liver Day, let us commit to take control of our liver health and prevent serious complications. Building healthy habits goes a long way in building liver wellness.”, said Sivani Sarma Deka, COO- India Business, BSV (A Mankind Group Company).
“Coagulopathy due to Liver dysfunction can be very complex and sometimes difficult to treat. Severe coagulopathy May need large volume of blood products which can be detrimental. using 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) is an excellent alternative for rapid correction of coagulopathy in life-threatening situations. However, maintaining overall liver health is the most effective prevention strategy. With a few mindful lifestyle changes, liver has the ability to repair and regenerate. Checkups are especially important for individuals with risk factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, alcohol use, family history of liver disease, or the use of certain medications. On this World Liver Day, let us commit towards caring for our liver and building the essential habit of taking regular liver check,” said Dr, Gaurav Gupta, Liver Transplant, Hepato -Pancreato- Billiary Surgery, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai
World Liver Day is observed every year on April 19 to raise global awareness and educate people about liver health and liver-related disorders. With the liver being the body’s powerhouse, it is imperative to keep it healthy. This Day highlights the need of developing healthy lifestyle behaviours while promoting awareness on regular screenings and check-ups for the wellbeing of the liver and reduce the burden of liver conditions.
