Hyderabad, May 7: CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, successfully performed a rare and highly complex organ-preserving pancreatic surgery on a 33-year-old woman from Ibrahimpatnam, helping her avoid lifelong diabetes and digestive complications often associated with major pancreatic surgeries.

CARE Hospitals Performs Rare Organ-Preserving Pancreatic Surgery, Prevents Lifelong Complications for Young Patient

What initially appeared to be routine abdominal discomfort led to the diagnosis of a pancreatic tumour — a condition that is frequently detected late due to vague early-stage symptoms.

Pancreatic tumours often require removal of a large portion of the pancreas or, in some cases, the entire organ. Since the pancreas plays a critical role in insulin production and digestion, such procedures can result in lifelong insulin dependency and digestive complications requiring continuous medical support.

Recognising the importance of preserving long-term quality of life, the surgical team at CARE Hospitals adopted an advanced organ-preserving approach.

Led by Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, the team performed a laparoscopic central pancreatectomy followed by a Roux-en-Y pancreaticojejunostomy — a highly specialised procedure designed to remove only the tumour while preserving as much healthy pancreatic tissue and function as possible.

The surgery was particularly challenging due to the patient’s soft pancreas and extremely small pancreatic duct measuring just 2 mm, conditions known to significantly increase surgical complexity and reconstruction risks.

Despite these challenges, the surgery was completed successfully. The patient recovered smoothly and was discharged within five days without requiring long-term metabolic support.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad said:

“This case was not just about removing the tumour, it was about protecting the patient’s future quality of life. When we remove a large portion of the pancreas, patients often face lifelong challenges like diabetes and digestive issues. In younger patients, preserving pancreatic function becomes extremely important. Central pancreatectomy allows us to achieve that balance. Performing it laparoscopically, in a setting with a small duct and soft gland, is demanding, but it offers clear benefits in terms of recovery and long-term health.”

Highlighting the broader significance of the procedure, Praveen Kumar Edla, Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, said:

“This case underscores a key shift in modern healthcare — moving from just treating disease to preserving quality of life. For a young patient, avoiding lifelong dependence on insulin or digestive medications makes a significant difference. At CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, our focus is on bringing such advanced, patient-centric care closer to the community, ensuring better outcomes both clinically and functionally.”

Doctors at CARE Hospitals also stressed the importance of early diagnosis, advising individuals not to ignore persistent abdominal discomfort, even when symptoms appear mild.

According to the hospital, timely diagnosis can significantly improve access to organ-preserving treatment options and better long-term outcomes, especially as complex pancreatic conditions are increasingly being identified among younger patients.
