Beyond Medical Treatment, Cancer Patients Need Connection, Support and Hope in India

Mumbai, Sep 11: As cancer cases continue to rise across India, experts are increasingly highlighting an often-overlooked part of recovery—the emotional journey of patients and their families. Beyond surgeries, chemotherapy and medicines, many patients silently struggle with fear, isolation, anxiety and uncertainty. Cancer support groups are emerging as an essential space where patients and survivors can share experiences, find emotional strength and realise they are not alone.

Recognising that the journey through cancer extends beyond medical treatment, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road organised a heartfelt Breast Cancer Support Group Meet-Up, bringing together more than 40 cancer patients, survivors and caregivers for an afternoon of shared experiences, expert guidance and emotional support.

The initiative highlighted an often-underestimated dimension of cancer care—the power of social bonding and emotional well-being in the healing journey. The interactive session provided patients with a safe and supportive environment to share their experiences, concerns, challenges and hopes with others who have walked a similar path.

The programme featured expert talks by Dr. Aditi Agrawal, Consultant General Surgery & Breast Oncosurgery; Dr. Priyank Chawathe, Consultant Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery; Dr. Hajuma Chaki, Senior Physiotherapist; and Dt. Riya Desai, Dietitian. The discussions focused on cancer treatment, recovery, physical rehabilitation, nutrition and the importance of continued counselling and support after treatment.

Dr. Aditi Agrawal, Consultant General Surgery & Breast Oncosurgery, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said, “Cancer treatment is not only about treating the disease; it is also about helping patients regain confidence and emotional strength. When patients meet others who understand their journey, they realise they are not alone.”

Dr. Priyank Chawathe, Consultant Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said, “Medical science can treat cancer, but meaningful human connections can make the journey of recovery stronger. Support groups create a space where patients can exchange experiences, overcome fear and move forward with renewed confidence.”

The session also emphasised the importance of post-treatment counselling, helping survivors transition from treatment to recovery with greater emotional resilience, healthy lifestyle practices and confidence. With this initiative, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road reaffirmed its commitment to holistic cancer care—where treatment does not end at the hospital bed, but continues through counselling, rehabilitation, compassion and community support.
