New Delhi, April 22: A new higher education institution, Pravaha, has been unveiled with the vision of establishing Bihar’s first globally benchmarked multidisciplinary university, aimed at bridging the growing gap between rising enrolment and graduate employability in India.
Formally introduced at an event in New Delhi, Pravaha is envisioned as an institution “rooted in Bihar, flowing to the world,” with a strong emphasis on capability-led education and real-world readiness.
India’s higher education sector has witnessed rapid expansion in recent years; however, employability outcomes remain uneven. With fewer than half of graduates considered job-ready, the system faces a structural imbalance where access has outpaced capability development. This challenge is particularly pronounced in Bihar, where the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) stands at 17.1%, significantly below the national average of 28.4%, leading to a continued outflow of students seeking quality education elsewhere.
Pravaha is being led by a distinguished group of institution builders and industry leaders, including Dr Ajay Kumar, Pramath Raj Sinha, Founding Dean of Indian School of Business and Chairperson of Ashoka University’s Board of Trustees, and Uday Shankar, Vice Chairman of JioStar and former President of The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific. The broader governance ecosystem includes prominent figures such as Anuradha Shankar, Rukmini Banerji, Manjari Jaruhar, Shreyasi Singh, and Tripurari Sharan.
The institution will adopt a phased development approach, beginning with the launch of a fully funded one-year postgraduate Pravaha Fellowship in August 2027. The Fellowship will admit a selective cohort of 50–100 students and serve as a pilot for curriculum innovation, pedagogy, and outcome measurement. Pravaha is expected to transition into a full-fledged university by 2029, scaling to approximately 1,500 students and impacting over 5,000 learners within its first decade.
The Fellowship curriculum will focus on high-demand sectors such as technology, artificial intelligence, data science, business leadership, design, and entrepreneurship. Graduates are expected to pursue careers across consulting, startups, and the technology ecosystem.
The Pravaha campus is being developed in Loma, Vaishali, approximately 62 km from Patna, on a 20-acre site. Phase 1 construction, covering 50,000 sq. ft., is currently underway and is scheduled for completion by mid-2027. The academic model will combine data-driven decision-making, AI-led learning, and real-world problem solving, supported by a hybrid faculty approach that integrates global academics and industry practitioners. Execution is being led by Jetri, overseeing academic design, regulatory processes, and operational readiness.
Commenting on the initiative, Cynthia McCaffrey, Representative of UNICEF India, said,
“This is investing in young people in Bihar, bringing together the ecosystem of those so invested in its future. What is so important about this convening is the coming together of those who care deeply about shaping the future.”
Vineet Gupta, Founder and Trustee of Ashoka University and Plaksha University, added, “Bihar’s Gross Enrolment Ratio is significantly below the national average. Institutions like Pravaha can help change that. When institutions are created from the ground up, they enable fresh thinking, innovation, and outstanding programmes.”
Vrunda Bansode, Founder & CEO of Impactica.org, noted,
“Bihar faces a massive capacity challenge in higher education, with a significantly higher student-to-university ratio compared to other states. Institutions like Pravaha are critical, and we hope to see many more such models emerge.”
With a focus on building high-capability professionals and contributing to regional economic development, Pravaha aims to create a scalable model for institution-building in underserved regions, setting a new benchmark for higher education in India.
