As the University of Glasgow marks its 575th anniversary, the story of an Indian graduate reveals how research carried out at the University helped document Kerala’s natural resources more than a century ago.
Kishori Lal Moudgill investigated the chemical properties of essential oils from Travancore, now part of Kerala, contributing to international scientific understanding of the region’s plant-based materials.
Born in Ballowal in Punjab, Moudgill studied at His Highness the Maharaja’s College in Trivandrum and the University of Cambridge before enrolling at Glasgow in 1913. He graduated with a BSc in Pure Science in 1916 and remained as a research student, later receiving his DSc.
His doctoral thesis, Some Travancore Essential Oils, examined oils including cardamom and those derived from Ageratum conyzoides, commonly known as appa grass.
Essential oils were important ingredients in food, fragrances and other commercial products. Studying their chemical composition and physical properties helped chemists identify and compare these natural substances and assess their quality.
Moudgill’s scientific achievements were recognised in both India and the UK. He became a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and in 1924 was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland.
