Gandhinagar, May 19 : As expectations from engineering education evolve, today’s students are inclined to move beyond traditional learnings. To address this, Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar’s emphasis on experiential learning and early exposure to research provides students the opportunity to be ready for real-world challenges at an early stage of their academic journey.

Highlighting this approach, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, said,
“At IIT Gandhinagar, we aim to create an academic environment that encourages curiosity, flexibility, and early engagement with practical challenges, equipping students with both technical knowledge and the ability to think critically and innovate.”
The institute’s academic structure combines disciplinary foundations with flexibility to explore emerging technologies and sciences. This enables students to explore beyond their core branches.
The institute offers a Foundation programme right at the beginning of the new academic batch. This initiative helps students transition to college life while learning new skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and creativity, among others.
In addition to this, course modules such as ‘World of Engineering’ help students address real-world problems by developing science based solutions while working in team settings from their first year. This approach inspires them to collaborate and apply theoretical concepts to practical problems early in their academic journey.
To boost students’ innovative thinking, Invent@IITGN offers a summer programme where they apply their knowledge and skills to innovate and develop prototypes to address societal problems. The programme also enables them to take ideas through the design, testing, and pitching phase and understand the structure and process of converting an idea to a business model.
Tinkerers’ Lab, Maker Bhavan, and other research centres at the institute help students gain hands-on learning and experience multiple domains such as AI, Data Science, Sustainability, Advanced Manufacturing, and Materials Engineering, among others.
In addition, through initiatives such as Project SAMARTH (Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub), IITGN is encouraging its students to work towards building a skilled workforce and contribute to the growing semiconductor ecosystem in India.
Under its multidisciplinary learning approach, education through interdisciplinary elective courses, internships, and entrepreneurship opportunities, students get an opportunity to grow holistically.
It is notable that other than JEE Advanced-based admissions, IITGN also accepts applications from students selected to national Olympiad training camps, providing an alternate pathway for academically talented students. Additionally, through multiple financial aid and scholarships, the institute ensures access for students from various socio-economic backgrounds.
With students placed in technology firms, core engineering companies, startups, and research organisations, the successful placement drive assists IITGN’s academic and experiential learning approach.
IITGN has a fully residential campus and provides sports and recreational facilities for students’ all-rounded development. With diverse linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. students get a chance to connect with peers from regions, adding to their overall experience on campus. The institute also offers first-year foundation courses in Hindi to support inclusive learning.
IIT Gandhinagar provides strong doctoral and Start Early PhD programmes with institute fellowships, interdisciplinary research support, and global exposure opportunities, enabling students to engage with advanced research early in their academic journey.
Students Testimonials
Sharing his experience, Debojit Das, a final-year BTech–MTech (Dual Degree) student in Mechanical Engineering, IITGN, said,
“The course shaped how I think about engineering from my very first year. Working on a wearable child-safety solution taught me to take on meaningful problems, break them into workable solutions, and collaborate effectively. It also helped me build confidence in tackling real-world challenges.”
Reflecting on her journey, Jiya Desai, a final-year BTech student in Computer Science and Engineering, IITGN, said,
“It taught me teamwork, leadership, and what it means to build something from scratch. Good engineering, at its core, is about people.”
For many students, the decision made after JEE often shapes their entire academic journey. Highlighting his experience, Siddharth Doshi, final-year undergraduate student in Electrical Engineering, shared, “When I had to make a decision after JEE, choosing IIT Gandhinagar felt right, and today I’m proud of that choice. These four years have helped me grow both personally and professionally, and have also led me to my dream job.”
Another student shared how the institute environment contributed to personal transformation.
“The biggest transformation didn’t happen only in classrooms or labs, but in the challenges, failures, teamwork, and late nights that shaped me as a person. IIT Gandhinagar gave me much more than an education, it helped me grow into a stronger and more aware version of myself.”, said Shrishti Mishra, BTech, Mechanical Engineering, Final-year student.
“When I was looking at my options after JEE Advanced, I had a very clear priority: I wanted to study Mechanical Engineering. Rather than settling for a different branch at a first-gen IIT, I chose IIT Gandhinagar because it offered me the subject I loved along with some of the best sports facilities in the country. The sports complex was actually the deciding factor for me, and it definitely didn’t disappoint,” said Abhijit Venkat Pallapothu, BTech, Mechanical Engineering, final year, IIT Gandhinagar.
