Bengaluru , June 5 : On the occasion of World Environment DayThe Indian Hotels Company Limited reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable and responsible hospitality through Paathya, its ESG framework that integrates environmental stewardship with community well-being and responsible growth. Conceived as a path to positive change, Paathya brings together IHCL’s efforts across clean energy, water stewardship, circular operations, waste reduction, green mobility and verifiable sustainability standards.

Under Paathya, IHCL has scaled environmental action across its hotels and destinations through a combination of operational transformation and ecosystem-led initiatives. As of 2026, 41% of IHCL’s electricity is sourced from renewable energy, 386 EV charging stations have been installed across 171 locations, 108 in-house organic waste composting plants are operational, 85 water bottling plants support reduced plastic dependence, and 54% of wastewater is being recycled across the portfolio.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President – Human Resources, IHCL, said,

“At IHCL, sustainability is embedded in our approach to long-term value creation through Paathya. On World Environment Day, we reaffirm our commitment to shaping a future where hospitality growth goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Our focus is on building scale with sensitivity — from increasing renewable energy use and accelerating circular practices within our hotels to supporting water stewardship and conservation initiatives in the destinations and communities we are part of. Through Paathya, our endeavour is to create shared value for the planet, people and the ecosystems that sustain travel and tourism.”

A key pillar of Paathya’s broader environmental agenda is water stewardship. Building on its World Water Day initiatives announced earlier this year, IHCL is supporting watershed restoration, rainwater harvesting, revival of traditional water bodies and groundwater recharge projects across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These interventions are expected to deliver a combined recharge and potential savings of more than 50 lakh cubic metres of water over a three-year period, while also contributing to rural livelihoods and ecological resilience.

Paathya also advances circularity in hospitality operations through organic waste management systems, wastewater recycling, reduced reliance on single-use plastics and in-house water bottling infrastructure. This approach is designed to reduce environmental impact at source while embedding resource-conscious practices across guest-facing and back-end hotel operations.

As part of its long-term roadmap, IHCL has set 2030 goals under Paathya that include sourcing 50% of energy from renewable sources, achieving 100% wastewater recycling, ensuring all hotels provide EV charging stations, making all hotels single-use plastic free, and equipping all hotels with organic waste management systems.

Through Paathya, IHCL continues to position responsible tourism as a catalyst for environmental progress, combining measurable operational change with destination-led action to help build a more resilient hospitality ecosystem.
