Seoul, Sep 5: South Korea’s exports have reached a record pace in 2026, crossing the country’s previous full-year export record even before the year is over. The sharp increase is being driven largely by strong global demand for semiconductors linked to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.
South Korea’s exports have reached around $709.4 billion, edging past the previous annual record of about $709.3 billion set in 2025. The milestone highlights the strength of the country’s export sector and the growing role of advanced technology products in its economy.
Semiconductors have emerged as the biggest driver of the increase. Semiconductor exports rose sharply during the year as demand for AI-related chips continued to grow, helping South Korea maintain strong momentum in international trade.
The export performance also reflects stronger demand from major overseas markets. Shipments to China and the United States have recorded significant growth, providing additional support to South Korea’s trade performance.
The latest figures come after another strong month for exports. South Korea’s exports rose 68.7 per cent year-on-year in August to $98.26 billion, extending the country’s export growth streak to 15 consecutive months.
The surge is important for the South Korean economy because exports remain a major source of industrial activity, corporate revenue and employment. Strong overseas demand can encourage manufacturers to expand production and invest in additional capacity, particularly in high-value technology industries.
The export boom also underlines the growing economic importance of the global AI investment cycle. South Korean semiconductor companies are benefiting from increased demand for advanced memory products as technology companies around the world expand their AI infrastructure.
However, the strong performance is not evenly spread across all industries. Some traditional export sectors, including automobiles, have faced weaker demand, highlighting the increasing dependence of South Korea’s export growth on technology and semiconductor shipments.
The record performance nevertheless gives South Korea a strong position as it seeks to expand its presence in global technology supply chains. If demand for AI-related chips remains strong, the country’s semiconductor industry could continue to provide an important boost to exports and overall economic activity.
