Mumbai, Sep 1: Mahindra & Mahindra reported a strong rise in automobile sales in August, with total vehicle volumes climbing 42 per cent year-on-year to 1,07,648 units, helped by robust demand for its utility vehicles and commercial vehicles.
The company’s domestic utility vehicle sales stood at 59,257 units during the month, registering a 50 per cent increase from the year-ago period. Including exports, total utility vehicle sales reached 61,167 units.
Commercial vehicles also recorded healthy growth. Domestic sales in the segment rose 22 per cent year-on-year to 27,415 units, reflecting continued demand for vehicles used in transportation, logistics and other business activities.
Mahindra’s export performance provided another boost, with total vehicle exports rising 71 per cent to 6,054 units in August. For the April-August period, exports stood at 26,012 units, up 63 per cent from the corresponding period last year.
The strong SUV performance highlights the continued popularity of utility vehicles in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Mahindra’s updated Scorpio-N and BE 6 SPORTEQ have also contributed to customer interest, according to the company.
The August performance comes ahead of the festive season, traditionally an important period for automobile sales in India. Strong consumer demand during the coming months could provide further support to vehicle manufacturers, dealers and the wider automotive supply chain.
The increase in commercial vehicle sales is also significant for the broader economy. Demand for light commercial vehicles and other business-use vehicles is closely linked to transportation, logistics, construction, small businesses and movement of goods.
Mahindra’s sales growth is therefore expected to have a wider impact across automobile dealerships, component manufacturers, financing companies, logistics providers and after-sales service businesses.
The company’s performance also reflects the broader strength of the Indian automobile market, where demand for SUVs and utility vehicles continues to support overall passenger vehicle growth.
Mahindra’s farm equipment business also recorded growth during August, with domestic tractor sales rising 5 per cent to 27,595 units. Total tractor sales, including exports, stood at 29,507 units, indicating steady demand from the rural and agricultural economy.
With SUV demand remaining strong, commercial vehicle sales improving and exports expanding, Mahindra enters the festive season with positive sales momentum. The coming months will be important in determining whether the company can sustain the pace of growth and build on its strong performance across its automotive portfolio.
