Kolkata, July 27: Kriti Events & Fable Works hosted “Surer Guru – A Musical Tribute To Guru Dutt”, a memorable musical evening which celebrated the timeless songs that defined the cinematic legacy of one of Indian cinema’s greatest visionaries, Guru Dutt. The event transported audiences to the golden era of Hindi cinema through an evocative blend of music, storytelling and nostalgia.
Conceptualised and curated by acclaimed poet, lyricist and filmmaker, Srijato Bandyopadhyay, the production featured soulful performances by Jayati Chakraborty, Sounak Chattopadhyay and Shovan Ganguly, who paid tribute to the unforgettable melodies immortalised in Guru Dutt’s films. The evening celebrated an extraordinary period in Indian cinema when Sahir Ludhianvi’s poignant lyrics, Sachin Dev Burman’s timeless compositions, the iconic voices of Geeta Dutt, Hemant Kumar and Mohammed Rafi and Guru Dutt’s unparalleled visual storytelling came together to create enduring classics.
The musical highlighted how these legendary artists collectively shaped some of the finest musical moments in Indian film history. A significant part of the presentation reflected on Guru Dutt’s deeply personal approach to filmmaking, where his life and art often became inseparable. Films such as Kaagaz Ke Phool stood as powerful examples of the emotional honesty that defined his cinematic vision.
One of the evening’s highlights was Jayati Chakraborty’s rendition of Geeta Dutt’s evergreen classics, offering Kolkata audiences a rare opportunity to experience these timeless songs in her distinctive voice. Sounak Chattopadhyay and Shovan Ganguly complemented the tribute with powerful performances, bringing freshness and emotion to songs that have remained beloved across generations.
