New Delhi, Aug 18: India’s general insurance industry continued to grow in FY26, with gross direct premium income rising 9 per cent to Rs 3.36 lakh crore, reflecting stronger demand for insurance protection among households and businesses.

India’s General Insurance Market Gains Momentum, Premiums Reach Rs 3.36 Lakh Crore

The growth highlights how insurance is becoming an increasingly important part of financial planning in India. Health, motor and other non-life insurance products are gaining wider acceptance as people look for ways to manage unexpected medical expenses, accidents, vehicle-related costs and other financial risks.

Health insurance remained a major growth engine, with the segment recording 17 per cent growth during FY26. Rising healthcare expenses and greater awareness about the financial impact of medical emergencies are encouraging more families to consider health coverage as part of their long-term financial planning.

Motor insurance also continued to support the industry’s expansion, while private insurers recorded stronger growth than public-sector insurers. The wider market is benefiting from increasing digital adoption, which is making it easier for customers to explore policies, compare options and access insurance services.

For ordinary families, the expansion of the insurance sector is about more than higher premium collections. A suitable insurance policy can provide a financial cushion when an unexpected illness, accident or other setback puts pressure on household savings.

The growing market is also creating opportunities for businesses across insurance distribution, technology, healthcare, customer service and claims management. Digital platforms are increasingly helping insurers reach customers beyond major cities and serve people in smaller towns and emerging markets.

However, the industry’s strong top-line growth also comes with challenges. Profitability remained under pressure in FY26, with the sector’s combined ratio rising to 113 per cent and profit after tax declining 23 per cent to around Rs 10,000 crore.

This makes efficient claims management, sensible pricing and disciplined underwriting important as insurers look to expand while maintaining sustainable businesses.

For consumers, the expanding market means greater choice, but also a greater need to understand policy coverage, exclusions, claim procedures and costs before purchasing a product.

India’s insurance market still has significant room to grow, particularly in smaller cities and among households that remain underinsured. Continued improvements in awareness, accessibility and digital services could help bring more people into the formal insurance system.

The FY26 performance shows an industry that is expanding in reach and relevance. The next stage of growth will depend not only on selling more policies, but on building products and services that genuinely meet the changing financial needs of Indian households and businesses.
