New Delhi, Aug 31: The Commerce Ministry is set to hold discussions with industry representatives on September 1 to assess the evolving trade situation between India and the United States and understand the concerns facing exporters.
The meeting comes at an important time for India-US trade relations, with ongoing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement and changes in the US tariff environment creating new challenges and opportunities for Indian businesses.
The government is expected to seek feedback from exporters and industry bodies on recent trade developments, sector-wise performance and the impact of US trade measures on Indian shipments. The discussions could help identify areas where exporters require policy support and improved market access.
India’s trade with the US has remained significant. Total bilateral trade increased to $140.76 billion in 2025-26, from $132.2 billion a year earlier. During April-July 2026-27, India’s exports to the US rose around 3 per cent to $34.5 billion, while imports increased more than 22 per cent to $22.12 billion.
The government-industry dialogue is expected to focus on strengthening India’s export competitiveness and protecting opportunities for sectors that depend heavily on the US market. Greater clarity on tariffs, market access and trade rules would help businesses plan production, investment and international expansion.
For Indian exporters, a stable and predictable trade framework with the US could support long-term contracts, encourage investment and strengthen India’s position in global supply chains. A stronger trade relationship could also benefit manufacturing, services, employment and foreign-exchange earnings.
The consultations are therefore expected to provide an important platform for the government and industry to work together on addressing immediate trade concerns while preparing Indian businesses for the next phase of India-US economic engagement.
