New Delhi, Sep 1: Global markets remained cautious on Tuesday as renewed tensions in the Middle East pushed energy prices higher and increased concerns about inflation and interest rates. Asian markets moved in different directions, with investors balancing geopolitical risks against signs of strength in key sectors.

Global Markets Stay Cautious as Middle East Tensions Keep Investors on Edge

South Korea’s KOSPI closed 0.23 per cent higher at 6,835.8, recovering from an early decline. Technology stocks helped the index regain momentum, while strong semiconductor demand and encouraging export numbers provided additional support.

Samsung Electronics rose 0.38 per cent, while SK hynix gained 1.14 per cent. The technology sector remained relatively resilient as investors continued to see strong demand for chips as a positive driver for the Korean economy.

Energy companies also performed strongly as crude oil prices climbed amid concerns over the impact of the renewed US-Iran tensions on global supplies. SK Innovation jumped 7.81 per cent, while S-Oil advanced 1.07 per cent.

Despite the recovery in the KOSPI, investor participation remained cautious. Foreign investors, institutions and retail investors were net sellers during the session. The Korean won also weakened slightly against the US dollar.

Other Asian markets presented a mixed picture. Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 0.24 per cent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell around 1.2 per cent. Taiwan’s benchmark gained about 1.28 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite slipped 0.17 per cent, while the China A50 index declined around 0.37 per cent.

Wall Street also ended lower in the previous session. The Dow Jones fell 0.70 per cent, the S&P 500 declined 0.33 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.12 per cent as investors reacted to rising geopolitical uncertainty and higher energy prices.

The rise in crude oil prices is becoming a major concern for investors worldwide. Higher energy costs can feed into transportation and production expenses, potentially pushing inflation higher and making it harder for central banks to lower interest rates.

Bond yields are also being closely watched. Rising yields can increase borrowing costs for businesses and governments and may reduce the appeal of equities compared with fixed-income investments.

The Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy outlook remains another important factor for global markets. Recent hawkish signals have made investors more cautious, while upcoming US employment and economic data could provide further clues about the direction of interest rates.

For India, global market movements will remain important as investors monitor crude oil prices, bond yields, foreign investment flows and geopolitical developments. India’s strong domestic economic fundamentals provide some support, although a prolonged rise in oil prices could increase inflationary pressure and raise costs for businesses.

The current market environment reflects a balance between resilient economic and corporate activity on one side and rising geopolitical and financial risks on the other. Investors are likely to remain selective in the near term as they wait for clearer signals from energy markets, central banks and global economic data.

With September beginning amid heightened uncertainty, the direction of crude oil prices and developments in the Middle East are expected to remain key drivers of global investor sentiment in the days ahead.
