Chairman & CEO, Railway Board Reviews Progress of RVNL's Landmark Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit

Kazipet, Telangana, July 07: Shri Satish Kumar, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board, today reviewed the progress of the Railway Manufacturing Unit (RMU) at Kazipet, Telangana, being developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. He was briefed by RVNL officials through a detailed presentation and a scale model on the design, layout and execution status of the ₹597.68-crore project. During the visit, he inspected the Main Manufacturing Shed, Coach Shop, Paint Shop and Final Testing Shop, reviewed the progress and operational readiness of the facilities, and held discussions with senior railway officials on the timely completion and operationalisation of the project.

Spread over nearly 160 acres, the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit is a flagship railway infrastructure project that will significantly enhance the rolling stock manufacturing capacity of Indian Railways. Strategically located at Kazipet, a major junction under South Central Railway on the Balharshah–Secunderabad trunk route, the facility offers seamless connectivity to the national railway network for efficient movement of raw materials and finished rolling stock.

The Railway Manufacturing Unit has been conceived as a versatile facility for manufacturing new-generation Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMUs), passenger coaches, trainsets and other modern rolling stock. It will also undertake maintenance, repair and overhaul of next-generation rolling stock, thereby strengthening lifecycle support for Indian Railways.

Built using advanced industrial engineering practices, the facility incorporates state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies to enhance productivity, quality and operational efficiency. Its key infrastructure includes a four-bay Main Manufacturing Shop, a fully automated robotic paint shop, testing and inspection facilities, wheel and bogie shops, integrated material handling systems, heavy-duty gantry cranes, specialised assembly bays, an extensive internal railway track network, dedicated connectivity to Kazipet Yard and modern signalling integration for seamless movement of rolling stock.

The Kazipet RMU has been developed with a strong focus on sustainability. The green-rated industrial complex features a 2 MWp rooftop solar power plant, energy-efficient LED lighting, four rainwater harvesting ponds with a cumulative capacity of 100 lakh litres, a modern sewage treatment plant, and Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) structures that improve energy efficiency, maximise natural lighting and reduce maintenance requirements.

RVNL has developed the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit on a turnkey EPC basis, creating a state-of-the-art railway manufacturing complex comprising industrial buildings, workshops, railway tracks, utilities, electrical and signalling systems, green infrastructure, material handling facilities and all supporting infrastructure required for the manufacture and maintenance of modern rolling stock.

During the inspection, Shri Satish Kumar directed officials to ensure timely completion of the remaining works and operationalisation of the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit as per schedule. He observed that the project would play an important role in strengthening India’s railway manufacturing capabilities while generating employment opportunities and promoting industrial development in the region.

Speaking on the significance of the project, Shri Satish Kumar, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board, said: “The Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit is a strategically important project that will significantly strengthen India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem and support the growing requirements of Indian Railways. I am pleased with the progress achieved by RVNL in developing this world-class facility. Once operational, it will substantially enhance the country’s rolling stock manufacturing capacity, support the production and maintenance of modern rolling stock, generate employment opportunities and contribute to regional industrial development. I have advised the project team to complete the remaining works as per schedule so that this important facility can be operationalised at the earliest.”

Once operational, the Kazipet Railway Manufacturing Unit will support the long-term expansion and modernisation of Indian Railways, generate significant direct and indirect employment, catalyse industrial development in Telangana and reinforce India’s vision of self-reliance in railway manufacturing.

During the inspection, Shri Satish Kumar was accompanied by Shri Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager, South Central Railway; Dr. R. Gopalakrishnan, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad Division; Shri P. V.
