New Delhi, Sep 3: India is set to broaden its vehicle safety framework with the planned rollout of Bharat NCAP 2.0 from October 2027, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
The upgraded programme will look beyond the protection offered by a vehicle during a crash. It is expected to assess a wider safety chain, including crash avoidance, passenger and pedestrian protection, and post-crash evacuation and care. The government also plans to consider newer technologies developed by Indian startups and global innovators.
The government is also working on a proposed graded points system for driving licences and vehicle registration certificates. Under the plan, traffic violations could lead to points being deducted, with repeated violations potentially resulting in suspension or cancellation of a driving licence.
The approach will also recognise responsible motorists. Drivers who maintain a good record could receive positive points and may become eligible for incentives from insurance companies and other benefits, creating an additional reason for motorists to follow traffic rules.
Gadkari said improving road safety requires more than safer cars. Better driving behaviour, stronger safety standards and the use of modern technology will also be important in reducing accidents and protecting lives.
With Bharat NCAP 2.0, India is moving towards a broader approach to road safety that combines safer vehicles, responsible driving and stronger support after accidents.
