New Delhi, Sep 4: Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s visit to India is giving fresh momentum to efforts to expand economic ties between the two countries, with a growing focus on emerging sectors beyond the traditional diamond trade.
During his three-day visit, De Wever held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across trade, investment, defence, technology, clean energy and other strategic areas. The visit is also aimed at creating new opportunities for businesses and investors from both countries.
India and Belgium have set an ambitious goal of doubling bilateral trade over the next five years. While diamonds and related businesses remain an important link between the two economies, both sides are now looking to broaden the relationship through sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, critical minerals, logistics and digital technologies.
The shift could create greater scope for joint ventures, technology partnerships and new investments, particularly as Indian companies expand their global presence and Belgian firms look for opportunities in India’s growing market.
Defence cooperation is also emerging as an important part of the relationship, with the two countries working towards greater military exchanges, technology cooperation and defence industrial partnerships. Collaboration in clean energy, critical minerals and sustainable industries is expected to further strengthen the economic partnership.
The visit comes at a time when India and Belgium are seeking to build a broader and more future-oriented economic relationship. By moving beyond traditional areas of trade and encouraging cooperation in technology, manufacturing and strategic industries, the two countries are creating a stronger platform for long-term business and investment growth.
The expanding partnership is expected to benefit companies on both sides while supporting greater innovation, investment and economic cooperation between India and Belgium.
