Aizawl, August 17: Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (retd) has said that major infrastructure projects, including the recently inaugurated Bairabi-Sairang railway line, its proposed extension to Zorinpui, and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, have the potential to transform the state’s connectivity and economic landscape.
Speaking about the state’s infrastructure development, the Governor highlighted the strategic importance of improved rail, road and multimodal connectivity for Mizoram, a landlocked state bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line is expected to provide a major boost to passenger and freight connectivity between Mizoram and the rest of the country. Its proposed extension towards Zorinpui is likely to further strengthen connectivity towards the state’s southern region and the international border.
The Governor also underlined the significance of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, which is aimed at providing an alternative connectivity route linking India’s Northeast with Myanmar and onward access to the Bay of Bengal.
These infrastructure initiatives are expected to improve the movement of people and goods, reduce logistical constraints and create new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment in Mizoram.
The projects are particularly significant for a state whose difficult terrain and geographical location have historically posed challenges to large-scale infrastructure development. Improved connectivity could help integrate Mizoram more closely with national and regional markets.
Governor Singh said such projects would not merely improve transportation but could serve as catalysts for broader economic development, employment generation and greater integration of Mizoram with the rest of India and neighbouring countries.
