Every morning, Senthil Kumar stepped out with a single responsibility on his shoulders—the well-being of his family.
Living in Sultan Bathery, Senthil, who is deafblind, was the sole breadwinner of his household. He worked tirelessly as a lottery agent, determined to provide for his wife and children. But no matter how hard he worked, the numbers rarely added up. Rent, household expenses, school fees, and daily necessities constantly stretched the family’s limited income.
For years, survival left little room for dreams.
Yet those who knew Senthil saw something remarkable in him. Despite the challenges he faced, he carried himself with quiet determination. He never stopped searching for ways to create a better future for his family.
That opportunity arrived when he joined Sense International India’s SPARSH Centre. Instead of focusing on his limitations, the team focused on his strengths. Together, they explored ways to build a more stable livelihood, and it was then that Senthil decided to try something unexpected—selling books.
With a bag full of books and a heart full of hope, he began travelling to nearby towns and bus stands, introducing people to stories, knowledge, and ideas. Day after day, he patiently built relationships with customers. People were drawn not only to the books he sold but also to the warmth, perseverance, and sincerity behind every interaction.
Slowly, something began to change.
With every book sold and every customer who returned, Senthil’s confidence grew. What had started as a small experiment soon became a source of pride and possibility.
As his business grew, so did his ambitions. With support from Sense International India’s income generation programme, he took another important step forward and opened a small petty shop of his own.
Today, that little shop stands as a symbol of how far he has come.
Senthil now earns enough to support his family with confidence, manage household expenses, and even set aside savings for the future. He actively oversees the business, keeps track of accounts, and carefully selects the products he offers. With the support of his family and the SPARSH team, he has built something that once felt out of reach—a sense of stability.
But the biggest change cannot be measured in earnings.
It is the peace that comes from knowing his family can look ahead with hope rather than uncertainty.
Today, Senthil dreams of owning a home of his own. He dreams of seeing his children grow into independent adults with opportunities he never had. And he dreams of expanding his modest shop into a supermarket that serves his community.
His success is a reminder that transformation does not always begin with grand opportunities. Sometimes it begins with a single chance, a willingness to try, and the courage to keep moving forward.
For Senthil, a bag of books became much more than a way to earn a living.
It became the first page of a new chapter—one filled with dignity, possibility, and the promise of a brighter future.
