Faridabad, Feb 17: After living with restricted mobility and persistent pain for nearly four decades, a 47-year-old woman has regained her ability to walk comfortably following a highly complex revision hip replacement at Fortis Escorts Hospital.

The patient had undergone right-hip surgery in her teenage years after a fall and had been living with metal plates and screws for over 35 years. Over time, the implants began to fail, leading to mounting pain, stiffness, and severe difficulty in walking.

A specialised orthopaedic team led by Dr. Ashutosh Shrivastava, Director of Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement at Fortis Escorts Hospital, performed a challenging right total hip replacement. The procedure was particularly complex due to significant bone loss around the femoral head and neck, extensive scar tissue from the previous surgery, and the delicate removal of decades-old implants.

Upon admission, diagnostic imaging revealed that the old implants were still in place, while the hip joint had deteriorated severely. The ball of the hip had collapsed, joint space was nearly absent, and the area had become deformed over the years. During the three-hour surgery, the medical team carefully removed the plates and screws and reconstructed the joint with a new, well-positioned artificial hip implant. The components were securely placed without complications, successfully restoring alignment and function.

The patient was discharged in stable condition just four days after surgery, marking a transformative milestone in her recovery and quality of life.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Ashutosh Shrivastava said,

“This case underscores the complexity of revision hip replacements after long-standing previous surgeries, the surgical expertise required for implant removal and reconstruction, and the effectiveness of modern joint replacement techniques in delivering life-changing outcomes even in challenging scenarios.”

Dr. Abhishek Sharma, Facility Director at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, added,

“We are proud of our Orthopaedics team for successfully performing this highly complex hip revision surgery. Cases like these highlight not only the challenges posed by decades-old implants and severe joint degeneration but also the expertise and precision that modern joint replacement techniques bring to patient care. Our focus remains on delivering safe, advanced, and life-transforming treatments that restore mobility and improve quality of life.”

The case stands as a powerful testament to the advancements in orthopaedic care and surgical expertise, demonstrating how modern joint replacement techniques can turn decades of immobility into renewed freedom and hope.
