New Delhi, Sep 5: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to acquire up to 9.99 per cent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights in ICICI Bank, marking a significant development in the country’s banking and financial services sector.
The approval allows LIC to increase its exposure to one of India’s leading private sector banks, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
The move highlights the growing importance of institutional investment in India’s banking sector. LIC, one of the country’s largest financial institutions, has a substantial investment portfolio and its increased participation in ICICI Bank could further strengthen its position in the private banking space.
For ICICI Bank, the development brings greater participation from a major domestic institutional investor. A higher institutional holding can also contribute to deeper market participation and reinforce investor confidence in the bank.
The RBI approval, however, only permits LIC to raise its aggregate holding up to the 9.99 per cent limit. Any increase in the actual shareholding will remain subject to applicable banking, securities and foreign-exchange regulations.
The development comes as India’s financial sector continues to expand alongside strong domestic economic activity. Greater institutional participation in banks can support the broader financial ecosystem by strengthening investment flows and improving the depth of the capital market.
For LIC, the approval provides additional flexibility to increase its investment in the banking sector, while for ICICI Bank, it represents an opportunity to have continued participation from a major long-term domestic investor.
Overall, the move underlines the increasing role of large institutional investors in India’s financial markets and comes at a time when the country’s banking sector remains a key driver of credit, investment and economic activity.
