New Delhi, Aug 21: India is rapidly strengthening its position in the global electronics manufacturing landscape and could account for nearly one-fifth of worldwide smartphone production within the next one to two years, according to a recent report.

The projected growth highlights India’s expanding role as companies increasingly diversify their manufacturing and supply chains beyond China. The shift is being driven by a broader “China plus one” strategy, as global manufacturers seek greater supply-chain resilience amid geopolitical and trade-related uncertainties.

India’s growing manufacturing ecosystem, improving infrastructure and expanding electronics capabilities are creating a stronger base for large-scale smartphone production. Government initiatives supporting domestic manufacturing have also contributed to the industry’s rapid expansion.

The country’s progress is reflected in the growth of its mobile manufacturing and export ecosystem. According to government data, India now has more than 300 mobile manufacturing units, compared with only two in 2014, while smartphone exports have recorded significant growth.

The expansion is also attracting greater interest from international technology companies and manufacturers looking to establish or increase production capacity in India. Recent industry developments indicate that global brands are continuing to explore India as an important manufacturing base.

If the projected increase materialises, India could strengthen its position as one of the world’s most important smartphone production centres, while creating opportunities across component manufacturing, electronics supply chains, logistics, skilled employment and exports.

The expected growth represents another step in India’s transition from a major consumer market to a significant global electronics manufacturing and export hub.
