Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: The Odisha government has introduced a major incentive for cleaner transportation by waiving permit fees for eligible transport vehicles powered by electricity, ethanol and methanol.

Odisha Gives Green Mobility a Push, Waives Permit Fees for EV, Ethanol and Methanol Vehicles

The decision, issued by the Commerce and Transport Department, is aimed at encouraging wider adoption of electric and alternative-fuel vehicles and reducing the cost of operating such vehicles in the state.

Under the new provision, eligible battery-operated electric vehicles, along with vehicles running on ethanol and methanol, will not be required to pay permit fees. However, the exemption applies only to the fee and does not remove the requirement to obtain a permit wherever it is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The government has also specified that certain small goods carriers will not qualify for the concession. Transport vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 3,000 kg have been kept outside the permit-fee waiver.

Vehicle owners benefiting from the scheme will still have to comply with other statutory requirements. Valid registration, insurance and fitness certification will remain mandatory as applicable, along with other requirements prescribed by transport authorities.

The policy is expected to provide some financial relief to operators opting for cleaner fuels and could support the gradual expansion of alternative-fuel vehicles across Odisha.

The inclusion of ethanol and methanol-powered vehicles alongside electric vehicles also widens the scope of the state’s clean-mobility push, giving transport operators more options as they consider alternatives to conventional fossil-fuel vehicles.

The government has maintained that the fee waiver is intended to encourage cleaner transportation while ensuring that vehicles continue to meet existing safety, registration and regulatory standards.
