Ahilyanagar, Aug 12: A 42-year-old farmer from Ahilyanagar, who had been experiencing persistent headaches and recurrent seizures for nearly a month, was diagnosed with a deep-seated brain tumour located close to the brain’s motor centre after medications failed to control his symptoms. Doctors at Saideep Sahyadri Hospital – A Network Hospital of Manipal Hospitals successfully removed the tumour using advanced navigation-assisted brain surgery. The patient recovered well without paralysis or post-operative seizures, making it the first navigation-assisted brain tumour surgery performed at the hospital and in the city.
The patient had earlier undergone treatment for a suspected neuroendocrine tumour. However, when his headaches and recurrent seizures persisted despite treatment, doctors advised an MRI of the brain, which revealed a 3 × 2 cm malignant brain tumour deep within the left frontal lobe. Located close to the motor cortex, the tumour posed a significant surgical challenge, as even a minor deviation during the procedure could have resulted in paralysis or speech impairment.

“Considering the tumour’s critical location. We decided to perform Navigation-Assisted Brain Tumour Surgery using frameless neuronavigation. Unlike conventional brain surgery that usually requires a large opening in the skull, the advanced navigation system enabled surgeons to accurately identify the tumour throughout the procedure and make real-time adjustments while operating. This allowed us to reach the tumour through a 12 mm keyhole opening, avoiding a large craniotomy and minimising damage to the surrounding healthy brain tissue.”
He further added,
“Persistent headaches, recurrent seizures, weakness in the limbs or changes in speech should never be ignored. While these symptoms may not always indicate a brain tumour, timely evaluation and appropriate imaging can help detect serious neurological conditions early which improves treatment outcomes and quality of life of the patient.”

The surgery was completed successfully in about 90 minutes, and the tumour was removed completely. After the procedure, patient did not experience any seizures or neurological deficits, and his persistent headaches were reduced significantly. He was discharged three days later and is expected to resume his routine activities within a week.
