Mumbai, July 31: World Lung Cancer Day is observed every year on August 1st, 2026. This year, the theme for World Lung Cancer Day is ‘Together Through Lung Cancer ’, emphasising the role played by community support and equal access to lung cancer screening.
As per the WHO Global Status Report on Cancer 2026, nearly 20.6 million new cancer cases and around 10 million cancer-related deaths occur every year, making it the second leading cause of death after heart disease, globally. It is estimated that new cancer cases will reach around 35 million by the year 2050, and lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death all across the world. It is one of the most common cancer types that is diagnosed in both men and women, causing more cancer-related deaths than colorectal, breast, or prostate cancer.
One of the best ways to treat lung cancer is considered as surgery, for people who are diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer. The report further states that access to lung cancer surgery is inconsistent, and the screening for colorectal and lung cancer has the lowest levels of execution compared to any cancer worldwide. Cancer screening generally reaches only people who are at high risk, mainly in higher-income settings and through minimal-dose CT scans. Several lung cancer cases are detected late, with earlier diagnosis being linked to both better chances of survival and reduced treatment expenses, making diagnostic pathways and quicker referral key to enhancing outcomes for people who are affected by lung cancer.
