May 20 : A new global workforce study by DeskTime reveals that artificial intelligence adoption in workplaces has surged dramatically, with total time spent on AI tools nearly tripling year over year as employees increasingly integrate AI into daily work processes.

Workplace time tracking data confirms AI usage is tripling year-on-year among office employees

The study analyzed anonymized data from over 50,000 users between 2023 and April 2026, tracking AI usage patterns, power user growth, and shifts in market share across leading AI tools.

AI Usage Shows Rapid and Sustained Growth

The report highlights strong acceleration in AI adoption:

  • AI usage grew 2.6x between 2023–2024
  • Increased 2.8x between 2024–2025
  • Early 2026 data indicates a projected 3x annual growth rate

The number of “power users” (employees logging 26+ hours of AI usage annually) also rose significantly:

  • 3x growth between 2023–2024
  • 2.7x growth in 2025
  • By April 2026, power user count already exceeded the full previous year total, reflecting a 1.7x increase in just four months

Shifting AI Tool Preferences in the Workplace

While ChatGPT continues to be the most widely used AI tool, its dominance is steadily declining as competitors gain traction.

Key findings include:

  • ChatGPT usage share declined from 99.91% in 2023 to 74.71% in early 2026
  • Google Gemini rose to 14.38%, emerging as the strongest competitor
  • Claude AI increased to 8.56%, showing strong growth momentum in 2026
  • Microsoft Copilot remained relatively stable, with limited change in usage share

Other AI tools collectively account for a small portion of workplace usage, with no significant penetration yet.

The study notes a clear shift in workplace AI behavior—from near-total dominance by ChatGPT in 2023 to a more diversified and competitive ecosystem in 2026. Employees are increasingly experimenting with multiple AI tools based on task requirements, leading to faster adoption of alternative platforms.

The findings indicate that AI is no longer an experimental tool but a core part of modern workplace workflows, with adoption accelerating rather than stabilizing.

With AI, it’s often difficult to separate hype from reality, so DeskTime decided to look into what’s really going on in today’s workplace. The figures are compelling. While a yearly tripling of AI usage may seem extreme, our data shows it is becoming the norm. AI is fundamentally redefining work, and the risk of falling behind is growing exponentially,” said Artis Rozentals, CEO of DeskTime.
