Protect Kidneys Through Early Awareness

Hyderabad, Mar 12th:  Nearly one in ten people across the world suffer from kidney-related ailments. In India, however, lack of awareness often leads to late detection of the disease, with many patients identifying the condition only after it has progressed to an advanced stage. Alarmingly, kidney problems are increasingly being observed even among younger individuals.

To promote awareness on kidney health, World Kidney Day is observed globally on the second Thursday of March every year. On the occasion of World Kidney Day, people are encouraged to gain awareness and take preventive measures to safeguard kidney health. This year’s theme emphasises “Kidney Health for All – Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.”

In this context, an awareness programme on kidney health was organised at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, on Thursday. Doctors from relevant departments highlighted the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of kidney diseases.

As part of the programme, around 30 individuals who had undergone dialysis treatment and kidney transplantation at Kamineni Hospitals and are now leading successful lives were invited to the event. They shared their personal experiences with the media, explaining how they overcame the disease through treatment and determination. The hospital management also honoured patients who have courageously battled kidney disease. Certificates titled “Youngest Fighter” were presented to individuals who faced kidney-related challenges at a young age and emerged stronger, while “Iron Will” certificates were awarded to senior patients who have shown remarkable resilience and determination in managing the condition and continuing to lead active lives.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. A. Santosh KumarConsultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at Kamineni Hospitals, stressed the importance of early screening and timely diagnosis of kidney diseases. He advised that individuals experiencing symptoms related to kidney problems should undergo necessary medical tests without delay. “People should not panic and allow conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes to worsen the disease. With timely medical attention, many kidney-related issues can be effectively managed. Dialysis or kidney disease should not be seen as the end of life. With modern treatment options, including dialysis and transplantation, patients can continue to lead fulfilling lives,” he said.

Dr. V. Suryaprakash, Director of Urology, Senior Consultant Urologist, Transplant and Robotic Surgeon at Kamineni Hospitals, highlighted that proper hydration is one of the simplest ways to maintain kidney health. “If the body is not adequately hydrated, it can lead to the formation of kidney stones. Drinking at least two to three litres of water daily helps flush out toxins from the body, reducing the burden on the kidneys and lowering the risk of stone formation,” he explained. He further noted that even in cases of kidney disease, patients need not panic, as advanced medical technologies have significantly improved treatment outcomes. “With the help of the latest Da Vinci robotic system, minimally invasive surgical techniques can now remove even highly complex kidney stones and tumours. These procedures are highly precise, involve minimal pain, and enable patients to return to their normal routine as early as the next day after surgery,” he added, emphasising that healthy lifestyle habits play a key role in protecting kidney health over the long term.

The programme was attended by Dr. Anjaiah, Medical Superintendent, Dr. V. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Senior Consultant Urologist, Laparoscopic and Transplant Surgeon; Dr. Saikanth KumarConsultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician; Dr. Sandeep, Consultant Urologist, along with hospital staff.
