Veolia Secures Landmark Water Treatment Contracts in Mumbai, Reinforcing Commitment to India’s Water Security and Sustainability
Mumbai, Feb 26: Veolia, a global leader in environmental services, has strengthened its presence in India by securing the largest municipal water contracts ever awarded to a French company for two of Mumbai’s largest Water Treatment Plants (WTPs). The company has been appointed as the technology provider and awarded 15-year operations and maintenance contracts for the 2,000 MLD Bhandup and 910 MLD Panjrapur Water Treatment Plants.
Developed by Welspun Enterprises Ltd, both facilities are expected to be fully operational by 2030, supplying over 60% of Mumbai’s water requirements. Equipped with Veolia’s advanced technologies, the plants will ensure high-quality, reliable water delivery while reducing energy consumption, optimizing environmental footprint, and enhancing operational efficiency, making them ideal for dense urban settings.
Leveraging 25 years of experience in India, Veolia drew on its successful operation of the Nagpur water supply project, which includes five water treatment plants totaling 786 MLD. Through digital innovations like Hubgrade®, Veolia reduced Non-Revenue Water (NRW) from 70% to below 30% while providing continuous, pressurized water to over 3.5 million residents. The company also maintains a strong operational presence in Delhi and across Karnataka, delivering integrated municipal water solutions at scale.
Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO of Veolia, said:
“These significant new partnerships in water are a testament to Veolia’s commitment to India. Our goal is to bring long-term operational and technological excellence to every project, ensuring these vital assets perform sustainably for decades to come. From building on our strong presence in key cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Nagpur, we are expanding our footprint to co-create solutions that support India’s net-zero ambitions for 2070. Through our global Green Up program, we are proud to be the go-to partner for India’s ecological transformation.”
Expanding Beyond Municipal Water
Veolia is also advancing hazardous waste treatment, industrial wastewater management, and decarbonization in India. Key initiatives include:
-
Operating Gujarat’s first Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility in Ankleshwar for industrial wastewater management.
-
Developing India’s largest industrial hazardous waste landfill in Magnad, with a 15 million metric ton capacity and a 30-year operational lifespan, including green fuel initiatives to reduce carbon footprint.
-
Operating the country’s first 5 TPD carbon capture plant at Tata Steel Jamshedpur, capturing CO₂ directly from blast furnace gas for reuse.
Through these initiatives, Veolia is reinforcing its position as a strategic partner in India’s water, waste, and energy sectors, driving sustainable urban development, industrial decarbonization, and national net-zero ambitions.
