20th June 2024- In a historic move, former minister and senior BJP leader Surama Padhy has been elected as the new Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, becoming the second woman to hold this position.
Padhy filed her nomination papers for the Speaker post in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, and Pravati Parida. Her nomination was officially submitted with Dasarathi Satpathy, the secretary of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
This election marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s political history, following in the footsteps of senior Biju Janata Dal leader Pramila Mallik, who was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Surama Padhy‘s election is seen as a progressive step towards greater female representation in the state’s political landscape.
