13/07/2024- Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik won the Golden Sand Master award at the International Sand Sculpture Championship in Russia on Friday. The prestigious event took place from July 4-12 at the iconic Peter and Paul Fortress in St Petersburg, featuring 21 master sculptors from around the world.

Pattnaik created a stunning 12-foot sculpture depicting a chariot and Lord Jagannath with his devotee Balaram Das, the famous Odia poet of the 14th century. The Indian embassy in Moscow extended their congratulations to Pattnaik for his remarkable achievement.

Pattnaik, a Padma Shri awardee, has participated in over 65 international sand art championships and festivals globally, earning numerous accolades for India. This art reflects the story of Balaram Das, the author of ‘Dandi Ramayan’ and a devoted follower of Lord Jagannath in the 14th century AD.

The sculpture portrays the legend of Balaram Das, who, after being insulted and barred from offering prayers at the chariot of Lord Jagannath during the Rath Yatra festival, carved statues of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra on the Golden sand at Mahodadhi beach and began worshipping them.
